When setting up an iPad2 for E-Mail you might find that you are unable to send if your email provider is using SMTP Authentication there seems to be a trick to get it working.
What you need to do is setup your IMAP/POP account as normal, and then for the SMTP server set everything as advised by your provider, except do not put anything in the username and password field. Leave them set to "optional" and.
I have no idea why you need to do this, but it would seem if you enter something here then it no longer works. When you leave it set to optional I believe it uses the details from your POP/IMAP setup instead. I don't own an iPad so I only had enough time to resolve the issue, not explore it further.
